Unlike the high-achieving members of her family's secret society, Ada Castle has mastered nothing but the art of falling for the wrong guys. But now she finally has the chance to prove her worth: she just needs to gain access to a hidden school that her family has been trying to locate for generations. Granted, she accidentally goes on a date with the recruiter first, then is temporarily abducted, but Ada manages to secure herself an invitation to the Genesis Institute, where descendants of exiled Renaissance masters practice long-lost arts and sciences.
The school is a utopia of sustainable technology, medical advancements, and myths come to life, yet they are unjustly hoarding their resources. Ada goes undercover to steal their innovations for the rest of the world, but Genesis nurtures her creativity and challenges her views, and she can't help but fall for the school...and maybe also for her frustratingly off-limits recruiter-turned-mentor.
Ada's tangle of lies starts to unravel when one of her new friends goes missing. To rescue her, Ada is forced to work with a dangerous (and dangerously hot) classmate whose suspicions threaten her cover. And when the information she's shared with her family puts her missing friend and all of Genesis in peril, she'll have to choose whom to betray: the family she loves or the school that has helped her find herself.

Just out of sight, a banished society dedicated to artistic exploration and scientific advancement flourishes. At age 17, Ada Castle lands her first assignment: leave her New York City home for a remote island in the Atlantic; infiltrate the Genesis Institute, the school that forms the heart of this secret society; and bring its bountiful innovations back to share with the rest of the world. Ada descends from one of the Families, a secret order of masters that, since the Renaissance, has passed down the history of the school and its exiled founders, the Makers. Ada's mission is compromised when she finds a true home at Genesis, one replete with friends, a tantalizing romantic prospect (or two), and nourishment for her unique gifts. Max derives some of the hidden mysteries of the Makers from Jewish mysticism and folk tradition, and she evokes the bloody history of the Spanish Inquisition as a parallel for the expulsion of the original Makers from Renaissance Italy. Ada's father is Jewish (her agnostic mother's family is Catholic), and she identifies with other Jewish characters on the basis of their shared culture and history. Clearly calling out antisemitic tropes and emphasizing the diversity of the Makers, Max provides contextualizing details for the worldbuilding, which includes both secret masters and blood magic. The main characters are cued white, and the supporting cast includes a variety of religious and ethnic identities. An inventive, compelling debut that's sure to leave readers eager for the next installment. (map)(Fantasy. 14-18)COPYRIGHT(2025) Kirkus Reviews, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.

Grades 9-12 Ada Castle is among the youngest in the Families, a secret society of highly talented individuals. Although Ada doesn't seem to have any outstanding talents, she is tasked with gaining access to the Genesis Institute, the mysterious school run by the Makers and full of descendants of exiled Renaissance masters. They are believed to have developed the answers for all the world's ailments but refuse to share them. Ada is ready to be the Families' spy, but once she sets foot in Genesis, she is drawn to the Makers' way of life and appreciates how the program helps her creativity blossom. She is torn between her mission and the wonder that is Genesis. When a fragile friend is kid-napped by agents outside Genesis, Ada teams up with her sometimes-but-not-always nemesis, Rafe (short for Raphael). Ada is a convincing heroine, and it's a delight to watch her insecurities dissolve in newly found confidence. Max's world building and characterizations are remarkable, with a great setup for more thrilling adventures in this series starter.COPYRIGHT(2025) Booklist, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.
