The second book in National Book Award finalist Katherine Marsh's Myth of Monsters series finds Ava and her friends up against their least-expected foe yet.

Ava Baldwin is ready for her second year at the Accademia del Forte. Now that she knows that her fellow classmates, descendants of the so-called Greek monsters, have been lied to by the Olympians, she's ready to help them uncover their ancestors' true stories—if only she can stay out of the way of the new headmaster, Perseus.

But laying low is easier said than done, especially when Perseus seems intent on trolling Ava, making it impossible to control her anger.

When Perseus banishes one of her friends, Ava must lead a rescue party on a whirlwind adventure from the Stygian Marsh of the underworld to the ice caves of Mount Etna with Ares and the spirits of violent death in hot pursuit. But the gods won't be tricked so easily this time . . .

Ava and her friends return for another year at their magical school. After narrowly avoiding expulsion during her first year and discovering her link to the goddess Medusa, eighth grader Ava Baldwin returns to Accademia del Forte, a boarding school in Venice for kids who are descended from mythological monsters. Though she's eager to reunite with her friends, Ava is committed to her new mission: challenging the lies that the Olympian gods have told to keep themselves in power and conceal their misdeeds. Instead, however, Ava finds herself consumed with jealousy over her friend Layla's newfound beauty, popularity, and boyfriend. Her efforts are further interrupted by bullies like Cyclops descendant Zale, as well as the new headmaster, demigod Perseus, who infuses the school with toxic hero worship. Disaster strikes when Layla, like many girls and women before her, is punished by the gods for her beauty and confidence. Committed vegan Layla is transformed into a bloodthirsty Empusa and must choose between compromising her morals or starving to death; can Ava and her friends save her before it's too late? As in the series opener, this second installment skillfully weaves familiar mythology with coming-of-age concerns, all filtered through a feminist lens. Full of humor, adventure, and heart, this story, with its diverse cast of international characters, will delight readers. This successful sequel offers relatable heroes for a new generation. Gr 3-7-Ava Baldwin and her brother Jax are heading back to the Accademia del Forte in Venice, Italy, for their second year at the boarding school for descendants of mythological monsters. Ava, who is a descendant of Medusa, is excited to see her best friends Fia, Layla, and Arnold. With high hopes of staying out of trouble (unlike last year), things quickly get interesting when her shape-shifting vampire vegan friend Layla is accused of biting and nearly killing the new student during a school dance. Ava and her friends discover that Layla has a curse placed on her and has been banished from the school. Now on a rescue mission, Ava, Jax, and their friends embark on a wild journey that involves kidnapping Cupid and finding the only being that can release the curse before Layla dies. Written in third person, Ava presents as a determined middle school student who seeks equality in a school that favors boys, and emanates power in all of her actions. Many mythological creatures are introduced, which is perfect for readers well-versed in Greek mythology. Eighth grader Ava's mythology-inspired adventures are sure to keep action-lovers turning the pages. Ava and her friend Layla are described as having olive skin and dark hair. Other characters read as white. VERDICT A solid purchase for all library shelves where the first book was enjoyed.-Tracy Cronce
